The Family Health Foundation of Oklahoma (FHFO), founded in 1986, is the philanthropic arm of the Oklahoma Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) and is committed to improving the quality, availability, and affordability of health care for Oklahoma. The Foundation promotes and supports research, education, and other projects in the discipline of family medicine.

The Foundation is a charitable foundation, recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, tax-exempt organization, and is financed entirely by gifts, grants and donations. Due to the cooperation and beneficence of the Oklahoma Academy of Family Physicians, the Foundation has been able to exist and operate without any substantial expenditure.

The mission of the Foundation is to improve the healthcare for Oklahoma, specifically in the rural underserved areas. The Foundation is improving healthcare by ensuring the future of family medicine through the promotion of this medical specialty and the support of educational activities for medical students and residents in the area of family medicine.

Foundation Goals

  • To promote educational and research activities in the area of family medicine.
  • To support educational programs and activities which expose medical students and residents to the profession of family medicine.
  • To educate the public on family centered health issues.
  • To encourage philanthropy and involvement from family physicians, the corporate community, and the general public to support the missions of the Family Health Foundation of Oklahoma.

Future Physicians for Oklahoma (FPO) Program
June 1-30, 2010
Match will be done Mid-March

This student externship program is designed for medical students who have completed their first year of medical school and who have an interest in family medicine, especially those who want to practice in rural areas. The FPO experience involves interaction with the physician within the community where the student is placed. Participating students spend the month of June with a physician preceptor. Each student receives a $1000 stipend at the conclusion of the program.

7 Days in July/August
Students can choose to participate during the last week of July or the 1st week of August.

Applications mailed to incoming first year medical students June 2010.  This is a voluntary program designed to give incoming first year medical students a chance to shadow a family physician for a week to see how they interact with their patients and community.

Family & Community Medicine Interest Group (FCMIG)
The FCMIG is the student interest group at the OU-COM. The Foundation works with the FCMIG to plan a series of activities throughout the year. These include blood drives; skills clinics; a residency fair; volunteer clinics; and monthly speaker series luncheons.
